International Relief Teams (IRT) – Romania

Romania has the highest birth, death and infant mortality rates in Europe, and children under five accounted for half of all deaths. In July 2003, UNICEF released a report that speaks of a "child survival crisis" in Eastern Europe.

In response to Romania's high infant death rate and request for assistance from Romania's professional medical associations, IRT has initiated PROJECT "HEALTHY BABY – ROMANIA, a nation-wide program that will significantly decrease neonatal and infant mortality in Romania. The program is designed to establish consistent and measurable standards of neonatal resuscitation and infant stabilization throughout Romania by increasing the competency of obstetrical and neonatal professionals in these procedures.

PROJECT "HEALTHY BABY"–ROMANIA is designed to be self sustaining. Through this program, IRT will develop and equip a nucleus of Romanian instructors who will teach modern and consistent standards of newborn care throughout Romania. The new knowledge and skills gained by Romanian clinicians will lead to significant reduction of neonatal and infant mortality.

IRT has implemented similar programs in Lithuania and Latvia which have contributed to significant reductions in newborn death rates.

    IRT's efficiency:

IRT's administrative overhead is less than 3% (audited statements can be found online at www.irteams.org), and for the second consecutive year, IRT has received the highest (4-star) rating from Charity Navigator, America's largest independent evaluator of charities. Only 5% of the more than 4,260 charities evaluated have ever been awarded the highest rating! (www.CharityNavigator.org)
